Although it was only around 14Km to Pampaneira, the first of the hill villages, we had a climb of 600m to reach the village at around 1400m. After a leisurely start, we arrived, exhausted, at midday, to find an outdoor cafe in the sun for a beer. We were disinclined to proceed further to either of the two villages further up the gorge, and booked into the Hostal de Mulhacen, to be given a room with a private terrace looking West down the gorge and, possibly on a very clear day, out to sea, and North into the mountains.
